Local girl granted wish through national charity

Tallahassee – A young lady with a life-threatening illness got a wish granted through national charity Kids Wish Network.

At the age of five, Deana was diagnosed with a T cell deficiency. This illness weakens her immune system leaving her unable to fight infections. She has had pneumonia over 35 times in her short life and has had countless respiratory infections and cases of bronchitis. Now, at the age of 11, Deana’s immune system is attacking her joints and causing her knees, hips and shoulders to swell. She receives weekly IV treatments and also takes various medications. For Deana, a simple cold can have serious effects on her body.

While surfing the Internet looking for programs that would benefit her daughter, Nancy, Deana’s mother, came across the website for Kids Wish Network. After reading the criteria and discovering that Deana could possibly qualify for a wish, Nancy decided to refer her. It wasn’t long before Kids Wish Network Wish Coordinator Jill contacted the family and began making arrangements for Deana’s wish.

“I was trying to get a wish for her. Her immune system is weak and she wanted to do something to benefit her because she is home all the time,” Nancy said. “She decided she wanted a new flat screen TV and a Nintendo Wii for her room.”

With the help of Kids Wish Network Wish Funding Specialist Megan and some amazing local sponsors, Jill made special arrangements for Deana’s wish. A Hummer limo escorted Deana and Nancy to her local K-Mart to pick up the new electronics which were wrapped and waiting for Deana. Jill also managed to arrange for Deana to create her own stuffed animal at Build-A-Bear and visit Justice in the mall for a new outfit.

“She was totally stoked. She was just beaming and smiling from ear to ear. She was excited about the Hummer limo and that was her first limo ride,” Nancy said. “She’s recently asked why God made her this way and this day took her mind off all this.”

Nancy said that the whole day was so special and just what Deana needed.

“When she saw the TV she said, ‘wow, that’s a big TV!’” Nancy said. “She told me that this was exactly what she wished for.”

When the family arrived home from the wish, they immediately set up her new electronics. Nancy said they are blessed to have had this happen to them.

“The experience with Kids Wish Network was exciting and joyous,” she said. “Seeing Deana happy and not worrying about her illness has been the best part of this for me.”

Nancy said Deana couldn’t wait to tell her friends that she got a wish through Kids Wish Network. She said she was excited to have new things of her own.

Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Deana’s wish extra special: American Legion Post 13, Manners Limousine Service, Build-A-Bear, Justice, KMart Tallahassee
