Facility: Texas Scottish Rite
I am honored to nominate Jacob, age 17, as our May Hero of the Month. Jacob, who has spina bifida, has been a patient at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children for the past two years. During this time, Jacob has become an active participant in the Hospital’s Successful Bridges program. The Successful Bridges program teaches teens starting at age 14 to interact with medical professionals (and parents to let them!) during the program’s Teen Clinics and to practice social skills and learn independent living skills during quarterly Saturday sessions. Jacob is a wonderful success story! He has done well in the Teen Clinics, even riding public transit to the Hospital and going to his regular clinic visits by himself. Jacob lives with his father, so taking responsibility for his own care is a great help to his small family. While Jacob and his father are both quiet and reserved, they regularly attend the Saturday sessions and have incorporated what they learn into their lives. Jacob is also helpful to other teens in the program. For his great personal success and for his kindness toward other patients, I am happy to nominate him for this award.
