Emily is five years old and came to our hospital to be treated for H1N1. Her future was very uncertain for the first couple of weeks that she was in the PICU as she needed to be on the oscillator in order to keep her breathing. Emily was very ill when she needed to have multiple A-line attempts and she cried but did not move her arm. She also went through a severe withdraw from powerful medication after being extubated. Emily also needed daily physical therapy for weeks in order to regain muscle strength that would enable her to walk. When Emily was more alert, a blood clot was discovered and it was decided that she needed to have daily lovenox injections. Even with all of her pain, the main thing that stressed Emily was not being around her brothers and sisters. The first time I saw Emily smile was when we took a wagon ride down to see her baby brother. She was so caring with him and made me recognize what a wonderful sister she is even when ill. Emily eventually was well enough to go home to her brothers and sister.
