Teen who fell 30 feet into canyon is nonprofit’s Hero of the Month

A teenager rescued in November after falling 30 feet into a canyon was honored as Hero of the Month for University Medical Center by a national organization.

Kids Wish Network, a national nonprofit that honors children who have overcome difficult circumstances, named 16-year-old Eli Medvescek its December Hero of the Month for his bravery and positive outlook.
Eli, son of Arizona Daily Star photographer Ron Medvescek, was hiking with friends Nov. 11 in Pima Canyon when he fell from a rock he had climbed.
His friends called 911 and administered aid to Eli, who had to be flown by helicopter to the hospital.
He suffered a broken femur, cracked ribs and other injuries from the fall.
Eli’s injuries are healing and he’s working on regaining his stamina, Ron Medvescek said.
Eli received a certificate, medal, T-shirt and $500 gift card to Wal-Mart for being named Hero of the Month.
