Shawn is a 14 year old who suffers from sickle cell disease and has been receiving treatments since birth. He has had a multitude of complications related to his disease, ranging from severe growth delay to avascular necrosis of the hip. In an effort to control his chronic pain episodes, he was started on exchange blood transfusion program which has caused him to miss a fair amount of school. In the last 6 months, Shawn has taken an active role in directing the course of his disease and takes all his medicines independently. He has developed a plan for pain medicine at school so his attendance has improved. He has had a complete turn around in his attitude and sense of self direction.
