Charlie was recently hospitalized for approximately two weeks with a complicated course of pneumonia as well as a flare-up of an illness knows as chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis – an immune system disorder characterized by persistent yeast infections of the mucous membranes. As a result, Charlie had to be placed on protective isolation throughout the course of his hospitalization, and was unable to emerge from his room to interact with his peers. Because of the medication needed to treat his pneumonia, Charlie experienced numerous blood draws and I.V. starts during his hospital stay and also endured a procedure under anesthesia in which a chest tube was inserted to help drain his lungs. Despite all of these setbacks, Charlie had a smile on his face every day. His mother remained by his side during the entire process and he readily engaged the hospital staff with bedside play sessions or lengthy wrestling matches with the miniature WWE figures he brought from home! Charlie listened carefully as the medical team prepared him for his procedures and exhibited a great deal of courage and resilience during his stay. His bravery – which was quite evident for a seven year old – is truly a HERO OF THE MONTH!
