Local Boy’s Only Wish is Granted

EL PASO, Texas – Thirteen-year-old Donny’s wish for a big screen TV comes true with a little help from Kids Wish Network.

Donny’s biggest dream is to become a video game designer. In order to do this, he researches every game he can get a hold of by playing them all. When he’s not “researching” these games, he’s watching horror movies, the Disney Channel or a football game. According to his mother, TV is his life.

When a Kids Wish Network professional fundraiser called Lirna, Donny’s mother, the caller asked if she knew of any child who suffered from a life-threatening illness and might benefit from having a wish granted. Lirna told the woman about her son.

You see, Donny, who lives in El Paso, has been diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This is a disease characterized by rapidly progressive muscle deterioration. By the age of 8, Donny was confined to a wheelchair. He has a difficult time lifting his arms and will soon begin physical therapy.

For his only wish, Donny decided that he wanted a big screen TV so that he could enjoy his games in a brand new, highly detailed way.

“Donny thought about going to an amusement park, but he said that that would only last a couple of days and a TV would last a long time,” said Lirna.

Kids Wish Network Wish Coordinator Madeline made sure that Donny got his wish, plus a few extra surprises. In addition to the 46” flat screen TV that was discounted generously by Gorman Distributing, Madeline sent Donny a special gift box chock-full of games and fun things for him to enjoy. While gathering items to include in the gift box, Madeline knew that Donny loved Gene Simmons and his band, KISS. As she had fulfilled a child’s wish with Gene Simmons in the past, Madeline gave the rock star a call to see if he could send Donny a personalized picture or something nice and boy did Gene Simmons come through! Not only did he send personalized pictures, he also sent some signed KISS merchandise including a fantastic wall clock!

In addition to everything else, Time Warner Cable of El Paso also signed Donny up for a year of free digital cable to accompany his brand new television set!

“When it got here,” said Lirna, “he was just so excited! Ever since he got it he’s been on it. Today was his first day of school and I’m sure he’s been thinking about it [the TV] all day…he can’t wait to get home to play on it. She [Madeline] sure hit the target on the head!”

Donny’s whole family is just overcome with emotion that this wish has made him so pleased.

“That’s all he wanted,” said Lirna of her son’s wish. “He can’t be any happier. He’s so excited. He’s very grateful. If it wasn’t for you [at Kids Wish Network] it wouldn’t have happened. Thank you very much.”

Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Donny’s wish extra special: Gorman Distributing, Time Warner Cable El Paso and Gene Simmons.
