CHANDLER, Ariz. – A teen with a life-threatening illness has the wish of his life granted with a little help from Kids Wish Network, eBay and PayPal.
While on yet another trip to the hospital for his son Jonathan’s chemotherapy treatments, Robert was talking to a social worker when she mentioned that Jonathan might qualify to have a wish granted through some sort of organization. Robert asked about it and the social worker mentioned Kids Wish Network, a charity dedicated to granting the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. He decided to give the organization a call to tell them all about his son.
Almost three years ago, Jonathan noticed that he had a lump in his abdomen. It was diagnosed as a Desmoid Tumor. This is a tumor that grows in different parts of the body, and is often accompanied by Gardner’s Syndrome, which causes tumors to form in various places. He underwent a surgery to remove the tumor, and what was initially a six-week hospital stay resulted in Jonathan being hospitalized for a whole year. Every two weeks, Jonathan endures chemotherapy treatments. The treatments and surgeries have resulted in a leak in his intestine, which will require additional surgery to fix.
Once she was informed of Jonathan’s condition, it wasn’t long before Wish Coordinator Jen was calling around to organize the perfect wish for the teen, who wanted only the chance to have a “shopping spree” on eBay, his favorite website. With the help of Wish Funding Specialist Doris and some fantastic sponsors, Jen made sure that Jonathan’s wish would be granted.
It only took a simple request to eBay Inc- the company that operates both eBay and PayPal – for Jonathan’s wish to be realized; the kind people behind the world’s largest online marketplace had only to hear about Jonathan and all that he had suffered through to agree to grant his wish.
One morning, Jonathan was stunned to wake up to a call from his Wish Coordinator telling him that eBay had put $1000 into his private PayPal account. She then told him that a box containing some extra surprises from eBay and PayPal was on its way to him as well.
“He’s really happy,” said Jonathan’s father, Robert.
When he realized that his wish had finally come true, Jonathan excitedly began looking up all that he wanted to purchase, namely a computer that he could play graphics-rich games on. As of this point in time, he is still hunting for the best deal, which is what eBay is known for.
“He really wants a gaming computer,” said Robert. “I think he bought one or two little things, but that’s what he really wants…he’s still looking.”
Since PayPal and eBay granted his wish, Jonathan has had to go back into the hospital, but the box of great eBay items that came in the mail really lifted his spirits.
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Jonathan’s wish extra special: PayPal, eBay, Tempe Elks Lodge 2251, Chandler Horizon Rotary Foundation, Olsen Brothers Construction, Inc., Sons of the American Legion Squadron #2 and Woodmen of the World.
