SCOTT CITY, Missouri – A teenager with a life-threatening illness gets the computer of his dreams with a little help from Kids Wish Network.
In 2007, Shawn’s doctors discovered that he had a neurocytoma, which is a tumor on the brain stem. In October of the same year, he endured a surgery to remove the tumor, but the surgeon could not remove all of it due to its location. In 2008, the tumor was found to have re-grown and Shawn was started on a course of radiation therapy to shrink it. He cannot stand for long, is very weak and is on a rigorous medication regimen for his condition.
One day, while searching on the internet for wish granting organizations, Shawn’s grandmother Becky stumbled on the website for Kids Wish Network. After reading some of the stories on the site, she decided that they might be able to bring a smile to the face of her brave grandson and she gave the organization a call.
It was to Wish Coordinator Jen that Shawn confided his one wish: to have a laptop of his very own. He told her that he loved to draw and write and just be creative, and a laptop would be a fantastic new and personal way for him to express his unique creativity. Jen agreed and set to work on granting his wish.
With the help of Wish Funding Specialist Megan and some outstanding local sponsors, Jen arranged to have Shawn pick up his new computer as well as a brand new printer at Computer 21, LLC. When he got there, he was greeted with smiles, balloons and, of course, his wish computer. He was extremely excited.
Now that he’s had his computer for awhile, he’s getting used to it and is very pleased that he wished for it. “It’s newer than anything [other computer] I’ve had, so I’m still getting used to it,” he said with a smile on his face. “It’s great!”
One of the many things he’s been planning to work on with his new computer may even possibly be a book, one that he’s been talking about with his aunt since he was recovering from his last surgery. His wish has given him a new boost of confidence and a great surge of creativity; to say that Shawn is excited is understating it and that’s all that his sponsors and the folks at Kids Wish Network wanted for him.
For making Shawn’s wish extra special, Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following: Computer 21, LLC, First Baptist Church, Elks Lodge #639 and the Cape Girardeau Jaycees.
