Local boy has an “Aloha Adventure” with Kids Wish Network

COLUMBUS, Ga. – A boy suffering from a life-threatening illness has his wish to visit Hawaii come true through Kids Wish Network.

All Jamie knew was that she wanted to make her son Avery’s dream come true, so she did an online search for organizations to help and found Kids Wish Network. Their mission to help children with life-threatening illnesses fit perfectly with her little boy.

You see, Jamie’s son Avery has mitochondrial myopathy, a disease that saps him of his energy and muscle strength. There is no real treatment and no cure for his condition, which puts him at risk for damage to his internal organs. Avery uses a wheelchair when he travels long distances, and he uses oxygen at night as he sleeps.

Once in touch with Wish Coordinator Vanessa, Avery let her know that his wish was to visit the “Aloha state”. With the help of Wish Funding Specialist Megan and some outstanding sponsors, it wasn’t long before Avery and his family were on a flight headed to Honolulu.

“The whole trip was absolutely perfect,” said Jamie. “We had the best time of our lives.”

Avery’s entire wish trip was planned out for him, including all sorts of fun activities as well as great dinners for everyone to enjoy. Knowing Avery’s fondness for marine life and all sorts of beach fun, Wish Coordinator Vanessa arranged for the little boy to swim with dolphins, have a private surfing lesson, explore an aquarium and plenty more. Not a day was empty.

“He had so much fun,” said Jamie of her son. “Vanessa did such a great job for us. She is so wonderful…it was like we were celebrities. Everyone knew our names.”

“Avery just loved everything. He loves the water and the beach…he got to snorkel, he saw hundreds of dolphins that swam all around us. It was just perfect…he loved the surfing lesson, he even did a handstand on the board!”

The whole vacation was a dream for him and since he’s returned, Avery has been wondering when they’ll return to Hawaii.

“When we were there,” said Jamie, “we forgot about everything. We couldn’t believe it. Avery’s wish came true a hundred percent. We’ll never forget it.”
