MONTEVIDEO, Minn. – A young lady diagnosed with a life-threatening illness has her fondest wish granted through Kids Wish Network.
When she first heard about Kids Wish Network through the American Cancer Society, Heidi knew that the children’s charity would be able to do something for her daughter, Lindsey. Of course, at the time, she had no idea just how wonderful that something would end up being.
In 2008, Heidi’s daughter, Lindsey, was diagnosed with stage three Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This is a cancer that originates in the white blood cells and attacks the lymph nodes. In Lindsey’s case, the cancer was found in her neck, chest and abdomen. Though radiation therapy is used to treat Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Lindsey’s doctors were unable to use it on her because the cancer had spread too far. Instead, Lindsey had to endure chemotherapy. However, she suffered such a severe reaction to the chemotherapy that a port had to be installed in order for the12 cycles of the treatment to continue.
After her mother exchanged some phone calls and paperwork with the charity, Lindsey found herself talking to Wish Coordinator Jill, telling her all about her wish to take her family to Disney World. Jill promised the hopeful girl that her wish would be granted and, with the help of Wish Funding Specialist Megan and some terrific sponsors, Jill fulfilled that promise and so much more.
When Lindsey, her siblings and her parents arrived in Orlando, they were treated like royalty at the famous Royal Plaza Hotel, where Jill had secured their accommodations. Every day of their itinerary was booked with family outings to the theme parks that Lindsey wanted to visit, including SeaWorld, WonderWorks, Disney’s Magic Kingdom and Epcot Center; every evening was topped off with reservations at fantastic restaurants.
Lindsey and her family enjoyed every bit of comfort and fun that they could while visiting Florida and every second was spent in laughter and smiles. Now that she’s back home again, Lindsey has been settling back into her old routine. In fact, she’s due to start school again soon and she’s looking forward to it so that she can tell all of her friends about her wish trip to Disney.
“We had a wonderful time on our trip,” said Heidi. “Thank you SO much! The restaurants were wonderful! We really appreciate your [Kids Wish Network’s] incredible generosity. Thank you so much.”
