Mariah’s High Tech Dream Comes True

LOLETA, Calif. – A little girl with cystic fibrosis gets the computer of her dreams with a little help from Kids Wish Network.

Ten-year-old Mariah is a very funny little girl; she just loves to make everyone laugh. She’s also quite an artist with a talent for drawing. Mariah collects rocks and even paints on them! One of her favorite activities is cheerleading and Mariah’s best friend is her bunny named Little Lou.

At four years old, Mariah was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, which is an inherited disease of the mucus glands that affects many body systems. This disease causes the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the organs and leads to life-threatening infections. This condition also obstructs the pancreas, stopping natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. There is no cure for CF, and lung transplantation is often necessary as CF worsens. At this point, Mariah suffers sinus infections and terrible headaches. She has a low energy level and must take enzymes while eating.

Mariah’s wish all started with a phone call from a Kids Wish Network professional fundraiser. This charity, whose goal is to make the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses come true, was somewhere that her parents could turn to give Mariah something to help her cope with all that she was dealing with. It was Wish Coordinator, Jill, who learned of Mariah’s wish to have her very own computer; with the outstanding assistance of Wish Funding Specialist, Doris and some fantastic sponsors, Jill worked hard and got Mariah the computer she’d always wanted.

Like so many other children, Mariah’s first idea was to go to Disney World, but she thought better of that. “She’d love to go to Disney, but it’s only one time. She thought about it and decided that she wanted something that would last,” said Mariah’s mother, Becky.

While waiting on her computer to arrive, Mariah was surprised with a special Gift Box that came filled with all sorts of fun and exciting toys and games for her. “Jill was so thoughtful…it was like Christmas all over again!”

Though she thought her daughter couldn’t have been more thrilled than when she opened her Gift Box, Becky was in for a surprise; nothing could match Mariah’s enthusiasm when she received her computer. “She was so excited,” said her mother. “She didn’t know what to do first…she’s now got a list in her head of all the websites she wants to visit and things she wants to do with it.” For Mariah, her wish really came true and that’s all that Jill and everyone at Kids Wish Network could have wanted.
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Mariah’s wish extra special: Humboldt Internet, Fraternal Order of Eagles, BPOE Elks Lodge #652 and the Loleta Chamber of Commerce.
