KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A little boy with a life-threatening illness has the wish of his life with Kids Wish Network.
Seven-year-old Brendan has a smile that could light up a room and a personality to match. Brendan loves Sponge Bob and sports, especially baseball, football and NASCAR. He also has an artistic side, too, and enjoys playing guitar and drawing on his favorite toy, a Magna Doodle. His can-do attitude will get him far in life.
This spunky little guy wants to be a football player when he grows up, despite being diagnosed with spina bifida before he was born. Brendan’s condition began in the womb when his spinal cord did not close properly, causing nerve damage. He also has hydrocephalus, which is an accumulation of spinal fluid in his brain. A shunt that was surgically implanted to divert the fluid has unfortunately malfunctioned several times, resulting in multiple surgeries. This brave little guy had endured 10 operations by the time he was three years old, and now relies on a wheelchair for mobility at school.
After being referred to Kids Wish Network through his grandmother, Brendan made his one wish known to Wish Coordinator, Jen: to have his very own Playstation II game system. Along with the assistance of Wish Funding Specialist, Megan, and some outstanding sponsors, Jen worked her magic and set up a day that little Brendan would be hard-pressed to forget any time soon.
Just last Wednesday, Brendan was surprised to find a limousine waiting to whisk him off to receive his Playstation at the local Meijer’s. According to his mother, Judi, the limo ride alone made little Brendan ecstatic: “He really liked the limo…he just adored it!” As an added surprise, the driver, having heard about Brendan’s love of music, gave the boy a little ukulele! “He just loves it,” said Judi.
At Meijer, Brendan’s wish finally came true when he was handed his very own, brand new Playstation II game system along with the very popular “Guitar Hero” game. After the big wish, Brendan got to enjoy yet another limo ride to the Texas Roadhouse where he was treated to a huge lunch in his honor! What a day!
Now that he’s gotten his Playstation home, his mother says that he just can’t wait to get home from school just to play on it. “He plays on it every day after school,” says Judi. Brendan’s excitement hasn’t been dampened with time either; he’s told everyone he knows all about his wish coming true and the fact that he even got to ride in a limo. In every way, Brendan’s wish came true, making him, quite possibly, the “happiest” kid in Kalamazoo!
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Brendan’s wish extra special: Allegis Credit Union, Meijer, Leisure Limousine & Sedan and the Texas Roadhouse.
