AKRON, Ohio – A little girl with a life-threatening illness has the wish of her life with Kids Wish Network.
After an unexpected call from children’s charity, Kids Wish Network, Angela decided to tell them about the trials and tribulations suffered by her young daughter, Alissa.
At the age of five, Alissa was diagnosed with Long QT syndrome. This is a heart condition that causes arrhythmia and frequent fainting. Alissa has had a defibrillator implanted in her chest to regulate her heartbeat, to detect cardiac arrhythmia and correct it by delivering a jolt of electricity. At one point, Alissa even had to undergo surgery to replace her defibrillator, which had broken inside of her chest. She cannot overexert herself in physical activities and also endures regular doctor’s appointments to check up on her heart.
Once they were informed of Alissa’s condition, it wasn’t long before Wish Coordinator Jen was calling around to organize the perfect wish for the little girl, who wanted only to visit Walt Disney World. With the help of Wish Funding Specialist Doris and some fantastic sponsors, Jen made sure that everything was perfect before Alissa and her family flew down to Florida.
When they arrived, Alissa and her family were greeted “royally” at the famous Royal Plaza Hotel and started out on a packed itinerary complete with trips to theme parks, some swashbuckling fun at the Pirates Dinner Adventure and much more!
“It was all so wonderful,” said Angela. “Alissa absolutely loved it all! She had a blast. We had a great time there [in Orlando] though it was hard to fit everything in.”
Alissa and her family visited Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. Some of the highlights of the trip for Alissa were the Toy Story Mania! ride at the Hollywood Studios and the Buzz Lightyear ride at Magic Kingdom.
As for the other attractions, Angela and Alissa were amazed with all of the lights and sound that appeared when the sun went down. “The fireworks and the SpectroMagic show were awesome! We’ve never seen anything like that before!”
There was fun and excitement around every turn and Alissa simply soaked it all up. She even found a new hobby: trading Disney collectible pins!
At the Pirates Dinner Adventure, Alissa was the star of the show and participated in everything in front of a full house. By doing that, she earned the epithet “Princess Maiden Alissa”, which suited her just fine. “It was cool for her to do that because there’s so much she can’t do,” said Angela.
Now that they’re back home, it’s hard to settle down to the old routines but it is nice to be home. “She keeps telling everyone about the trip,” said Angela. “It’s so great to see her smile like this. Thank you.”
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Alissa’s wish extra special: Clarence Main VFW, The City of Akron, Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart, Compassion Partners, WonderWorks, Pirates Dinner Adventure, The Royal Plaza Hotel and California Pizza Kitchen.
