Kids Wish Network, a Fashionable Adventure

Purcellville, VA – Kids Wish Network sends a young lady with bone cancer to fashion week in New York City.

Courtney was diagnosed with undifferentiated sarcoma of the bone during her senior year in high school. A sarcoma is a type of cancer and, in Courtney’s case, it arises in the bones of her leg. Courtney has endured much pain during her fourteen cycles of chemotherapy and eight weeks of radiation therapy, but has always kept her calm. Courtney’s doctors are now considering an operation to remove some tumor tissue and will have a decision soon.

When her mother found out about a charitable organization called Kids Wish Network through the internet, she knew that they could help her give something special to her daughter, who had been through so much. Once they were contacted, it wasn’t long before Courtney’s wish was organized, in true New York style, complete with tickets to many different fashion shows, including the following: Herve Leger, Diane Von Furstenberg, Jill Stuart, Alice + Olivia, Badgley Mischka, Max Azria and Brian Reyes.

Courtney visited each show that Kids Wish Network had arranged for her and saw so many celebrities that she was star struck. “There were a lot of celebrities at each [show], which was really interesting. I don’t know how they deal with all those photographers!” Some of the celebrities she got to see were Lucy Liu, Michelle Trachtenberg, Amanda Bynes, Heidi Klum, Julia Stiles, Diane Sawyer, Alicia Keyes and, of course, Paris and Nicky Hilton. Courtney’s sister even picked up a lip gloss that fell from Paris’ purse: “I think she [her sister] wants to frame it,” Courtney said.

Along with the shows, Courtney also had the chance to tour fashion boutique, Castle Hill Apparel, and get a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on there. “The tour of Castle Hill Apparel was a great learning experience for me. I definitely had no idea how a fashion business actually works on the inside and Monique was really detailed and obviously very enthusiastic about what she does which was great.”

“New York was really awesome. I’ve never been before, just driven past it, so I was so happy to actually get to be IN the city! I would say my favorite thing about the city was just looking at the skyline and being around all the lights and hustle and bustle. It was such a contrast for me, living in the country.”

“This trip meant so much to me, and it was one of the greatest weeks I’ve had in a long time! Actually, the trip inspired me to apply to Virginia Commonwealth University’s Fashion Merchandising program as soon as I got home. Being immersed in the fashion industry for just a little while last week really gave me the push to make my dream of working in fashion a possibility, and I owe it to Madeline [her Wish Coordinator] and everyone at Kids Wish Network!”

For making Courtney’s wish special, Kids Wish Network would like to thank: Diane Von Furstenberg, Jill Stuart, Badgley Mischka, Brian Reyes, Max Azria, Herve Leger, Alice + Olivia, Castle Hill Apparel, U.S. Limousine Service, Roosevelt Hotel, Bateaux New York, Southern Hospitality, Planet Hollywood and Bryant Park Grill.
