Augusta, GA – Eight-year-old Jacob of Augusta is a typical boy in many ways. This special little guy loves to play Candyland, read books and collect toy trucks and cars. Some of Jacob’s other favorite activities include listening to music- he’s partial to The Wiggles – and playing Frisbee. He’s also absolutely crazy about baseball!
Recently, this special boy’s one wish to visit Disney World came true thanks to Kids Wish Network, an organization that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. Jacob has muscular dystrophy.
Muscular dystrophy is a condition that refers to a group of muscle diseases which cause progressive muscle weakness. Jacob is experiencing increasing muscle weakness and at times has a difficult time even just walking. In addition, he has epilepsy for which he must take daily anti-seizure medications, as well as a severe breathing disorder.
Jacob’s exciting adventure to the Sunshine State began soon after his mother, Debra, was referred to Kids Wish Network by a close family relative. Eager to learn if her brave son would qualify for a wish with the charity, Debra requested an application. Before long, she received the good news: Jacob had indeed been approved. He knew just what he wanted to do: Jacob wanted to go to Disney! His Kids Wish Network wish coordinator, Jill, immediately got to work.
Jill not only secured airline tickets to Florida and arranged for theme park passes to the many parks there, she also booked hotel accommodations, made dinner reservations for the family at area restaurants, arranged for spending money and more. Jacob was in for a truly spectacular trip!
While staying at the beautiful Royal Plaza Hotel in Downtown Disney, Jacob and his parents were treated like celebrities. With an itinerary full of things to do however, Jacob would spend little time at the hotel.
During his busy stay in Florida, Jacob visited the Magic Kingdom, the Animal Kingdom and some other area attractions that Jill had planned for him. His favorite part of the trip? “The Magic Kingdom,” laughed Debra. “He loved it there. That was his wish and that was where he wanted to be!”
At the Magic Kingdom, Jacob hobnobbed with some of his favorite Disney characters in person and rode various rides. Debra said he also enjoyed the Animal Kingdom where he went on an exciting safari ride and watched the different animal shows.
Jacob returned home from his trip tired, but with plenty of pictures and even more amazing memories. “It was great,” recalled Debra of her son’s special wish experience. “He had a lot of fun. He’s ready to go back!”
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Jacob’s wish extra special: Chili’s Grill & Bar, Friendly’s Restaurant, Pirates Dinner Adventure Theater, The Royal Plaza Hotel and Wonderworks.
