Gulfport, MS – Seven-year-old Jacquan was born with sickle cell disease, a disease in which the red blood cells created in the bone marrow produce an abnormal form of hemoglobin. Those suffering with this disease experience severe episodes of pain and eventual organ damage; they are also at high risk for stroke and cardiac arrest. Jacquan has been in and out of the hospital much of his young life and must see a hematologist every six months. In addition, Jacquan has a heart condition and must see his heart and lung doctors frequently. He takes daily medications and is unable to engage in any rigorous, physical activities.
Recently, this courageous kid enjoyed a very special break away from his worries for a precious while thanks to his friends at Kids Wish Network, an organization that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. Jacquan had the time of his life on his very own personal Wal-Mart shopping spree!
Jacquan’s shopping venture began soon after the family received a phone call from one of Kids Wish Network’s professional fundraisers. Jacquan’s mother, Sheka, was hopeful that after all her brave soon had been through, he would qualify for a wish. Soon after completing the application process, Sheka learned the good news: Jacquan had indeed been approved. Jacquan knew just what he wanted for his special wish: he wanted to go on a shopping spree.
Jacquan’s Kids Wish Network wish coordinator, Jill, immediately began the arrangements to make his dream come true. She not only arranged for the participation of Jacquan’s local Wal-Mart, she also had some other surprises in store for Jacquan. This extraordinary boy was ready for a special afternoon away from thinking about his illness and that was exactly what he did.
On the morning of the big day, Jacquan was stunned to see a sleek limousine arrive outside of his house, waiting to ferry him off to Wal-Mart. At the store, Jacquan was greeted warmly by the staff who presented him with balloons and a cake.
For the rest of the afternoon, Jacquan shopped to his heart’s content. Among his many purchases included a Playstation 3 and plenty of games to go with it! Later, he and his mom took a break for a tasty lunch at Chuck E. Cheese that Jill had arranged for them.
Jacquan returned home from his big shopping trip tired, but with plenty of brand new games and toys and even more amazing memories. For this special little guy, it truly was a dream come true!
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Chuck E. Cheese, King Limo and Cab Co and Wal-Mart.
