A Special Boy from Kansas Enjoys a Dream Come True

Overland Park, KS –12-year-old Jake of Overland Park has what is called Sanfilippo syndrome. The condition is composed of four different enzyme deficiencies and is progressive in nature. Children with this disease gradually begin to lag intellectually and will eventually lose their speech. They will also begin to experience difficulty with mobility and over time will be wheelchair dependent. Jake struggles daily with the effects of his disease and has been in and out of the hospital most of his young life. In addition, Jake has a serious metabolic disorder.

Jake recently enjoyed a very special break away from his worries for a precious while thanks to his new friends at Kids Wish Network, an organization that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. Jake’s family learned about the charity after a relative received a phone call from one of Kids Wish Network’s professional fundraisers.

Once Jake was approved for a wish, there was no question of what he was going to wish for: this brave kid wanted to go to Disney World!

Jake’s Kids Wish Network Wish Coordinator, Jessica, got right to work. She arranged for the Jake and his mom, Amy, to fly to Orlando for a stay in the beautiful Royal Plaza Hotel in Downtown Disney. Jessica also arranged for theme park tickets, meals in the area, spending money and more. Before he knew it, Jake was on a plane headed to the Sunshine State.

Both mother and son had an amazing time in Florida. Jessica provided them with an itinerary full of fun things to do. In addition to visiting the Magic Kingdom – where Jake got to hobnob with some of his favorite Disney characters in person – they also hit Epcot and Sea World.

Jessica also secured passes to Wonderworks, Orlando’s famous ‘upside down’ museum and, on his last night in Florida, dinner at the Pirates Adventure Dinner Theater where patrons get to watch a live, interactive pirate show while dining.

Amy said the experience was one they will never forget. After all that Jake had been through, it was a joy for her to see him enjoy himself so much. “We had a blast…we enjoyed everything!”

Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Jake’s wish extra special: Bennigan’s, Pirates Dinner Adventure Theater, Pizza Hut, the Royal Plaza Hotel and Wonderworks.
