Throughout the day the wish coordinators can be found organizing various wishes. Our wish kids ask for everything from trips to Disney World and Hawaii to shopping sprees and commodity wishes for things like computer, televisions, game systems and more.
The wish coordinators start the process with a phone call to introduce themselves to the family and to interview the child and verify his or her wish. From there, we move forward and start planning the wish.
The wish coordinators spend a great deal of time on the phone, calling sponsors all over the country to help with the wishes. For travel wishes, we need help securing accommodations, attractions, restaurants, airfare, car rental and spending money. For shopping sprees and commodities, we need help with donations of the items or funds to pay for them. We then create the family’s itinerary and mail it out with a huge box stocked full of toys and games for the child. These items all come from our Distribution Center which receives toy donations from some of American’s top toy manufacturers. Finally, one week prior to the trip we will call to reconfirm all the reservations that are made.
Once the family has come back from their trip or received their wish we will call them to touch base and make sure everything went well. And if it’s permitted by the family, we submit a press release to local papers in the family’s area. These stories are a great way to get the word out about what we do and we’ve actually done countless wishes for kids whose families read about wishes we’ve done for children in their communities.
From start to finish it’s truly a rewarding experience making dreams come true for these amazing kids!
