Mt. Airy, NC – A local teen wishes to meet the President of the United States and gets more than she dreamed for.
Christina’s road to the White House began when a social worker at the hospital where Christina receives treatment, referred her to Kids Wish Network. Christina’s grandmother and guardian, Carol, was hopeful at the prospect that Christina would qualify for a wish. Christina had been through so much and deserved something special to look forward to.
In May of 2007, Christina was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, which is a form of bone cancer. Doctors discovered the tumor in her bone below her right knee. They removed the tumor and had to replace her knee, and insert a rod into her leg. Christina then began aggressive chemotherapy treatments. She must visit her doctors often and requires a wheelchair for distance.
When Christina learned that she had been approved for a wish, she was ecstatic. This brave teen knew just what she wanted to do: she wanted to meet President Bush.
Christina’s Kids Wish Network Wish Coordinator, Madeline, got right to work arranging for Christina to meet the President of the United States. However, Christina would soon find out that Kids Wish Network wasn’t stopping there. Christina and Carol were not only going to meet the president during their stay in the nation’s capital, but would also be treated to special tours, attractions, and fine dining all in the Washington area!
The wish adventure started when Christina and Carol checked in to the Five-Star Hay Adams Hotel in Washington, D.C. After a delicious dinner at the famous Morton’s Steakhouse, it was early to bed. The next day was the big one.
The meet and greet with President Bush took place in the Oval Office. Carol said the President was warm and generous with his time with Christina. “He was such a nice man! He’s just the kind of person you feel like you can sit down and really talk to like anybody else.” Christina was overwhelmed: “It was fantastic! I’ve always wanted to go to Washington D.C. and meeting the president was surreal!”
For nearly 20 minutes, President Bush and Christina chatted about everything from Abraham Lincoln to Christina’s college plans. He even presented Christina with a special gift to take with her to school: a silver bookmark with the Presidential Seal on it. “He told her she was a fine young lady and then he kissed her on the cheek!” beamed Carol. “It was so sweet!” Christina was amazed at how ‘real’ he was: “He was so genuine. It meant a lot. He also told me that he was proud that I’m planning on going to college and to never stop reaching for my dreams.”
However, Christina’s wish didn’t end there. In addition to a very special meeting with the Commander in Chief, Christina took a tour of the White House as well as a tour of the National Monuments. She also visited the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Carol said that the overall experience for both her and Christina was “an absolutely unforgettable experience. The look on Christina’s face the entire time on her wish was so special!”
Carol was enormously grateful to Madeline and Kids Wish Network for making Christina’s wish so memorable. “I think it was the best time she’s ever had in her life. I hope all of the other kids waiting for wishes have as much fun!”
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Christina’s wish extra special: Chef Geoff’s, Grubb’s Pharmacy, Hard Rock Café, Hay Adams Hotel, Morton’s Steakhouse, National Park Service, Ogilvie Limousines, the United States Holocaust Museum and of course, the White House and President Bush!
