MENOMONIE, Wis. — On Sunday, eight-year-old Charlotte Basurto got her wish – a beautiful backyard playhouse – thanks to the efforts of the Kids Wish Network, and the generosity of several area businesses including Sean Staidl of Staidl Construction and the team from the ABC Supply store in Chippewa Falls.
Charlotte has a rare disorder known as Loeys Dietz Syndrome. LDS is a genetic condition that affects the connective tissue in the body. One of the primary concerns of children with LDS is developing an aortic root aneurysm. Other characteristics include scoliosis and cardiovascular problems. Charlotte has undergone surgery to replace her aorta and she has had numerous spinal surgeries in addition to a bone graft. Charlotte visits her doctors frequently and must wear a brace to keep her spine stable.
In spite of her physical limitations, however, Charlotte remains a cheerful and happy young girl with a huge smile and an even bigger personality! This extraordinary eight-year-old is absolutely nuts about High School Musical and never gets tired of watching the movie or listening to the soundtrack. Charlotte’s other favorite activities include working on arts and crafts, playing with her dolls and watching Hannah Montana on television.
Not long ago, Charlotte’s mom, Pauline, contacted a nationally-recognized children’s wish-granting organization in Florida called Kids Wish Network. After completing the application process, Pauline was happy to learn that Charlotte was indeed eligible for a special wish. There was no hesitation when this amazing young girl was asked for her number one wish pick; she wanted to have her very own playhouse in the backyard!
Kids Wish Network wish coordinator, Vanessa Covolo, immediately began the arrangements to make Charlotte’s dream come true. Before long, Vanessa had found some extremely generous folks in the community who were eager to help make Charlotte’s wish extra special!
Mike Boggs and Travis Schmitt from ABC Supply along with Sean Staidl who owns Staidl Contracting were thrilled to get involved and gathered the supplies. On Sunday morning, Staidl and Schmitt together with other employees from Staidl Construction and ABC Supply built Charlotte’s dream playhouse.
Many others also pitched in, eagerly donating items such as furniture for the inside, a doll house and paint, to make the playhouse extra cozy and comfortable for Charlotte’s new move!
Charlotte wasted no time in settling right in. Her mother, Pauline, was overwhelmed with the kindness of strangers and thanked everyone who was involved with this special project, saying that the house is “absolutely beautiful and Charlotte is very grateful to everyone for making her wish come true!” She was so appreciative for all the work Charlotte’s wish coordinator had put into her daughter’s wish and wanted to acknowledge her hard work. “Vanessa was a great wish Coordinator!”
Travis admits that Charlotte has touched everyone involved. “Charlotte’s story really tugged at everyone’s heartstrings. She wanted a playhouse and we saw a way to grant this little girl her wish and maybe make her life a little better,” he said. “We had a lot of volunteers who were willing to come out on a Sunday morning to do this project. It’s been a great experience and a way to give something back to the community.”
