Ashtabula, OH – Four-year-old Kyler of Ashtabula was born with giant congenital melancytic nevus, a potentially cancerous growth on the skin. The only way to remove the nevi is through numerous and complicated surgical procedures. In Kyler’s case, however, it is impossible to remove the entire growth, which covers 2/3 of his leg, and he will need to undergo periodic surgeries. His doctors started to work on removing the growth when he was two. They have also inserted tissue expanders underneath his skin to slowly stretch his skin. The procedures are very painful for Kyler and he will be having yet more procedures in the weeks to come. His mom, Debra, says in spite of it all, Kyler doesn’t let it get him down. “He’s a trooper!”
Recently, this courageous little guy enjoyed a very special break away from his worries for a while thanks to his friends at Kids Wish Network, an organization that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. When Kyler was asked by his Kids Wish Network Wish Coordinator, Jill, what he wanted most for his wish, he didn’t hesitate: he wanted to go to Disney World!
Jill took care of everything. In addition to booking airfare for Kyler and his family to Orlando, she also booked hotel accommodations at the beautiful Royal Plaza Hotel in Downtown Disney, secured theme park tickets and more. Soon, Kyler was headed to the Sunshine State.
After arriving in Florida, the family was greeted warmly at the Royal Plaza Hotel. “Scott, the manager, sent up cookies and milk and a watch for Kyler,” said Debra. “It was very nice.”
During his busy visit to Orlando, there were few parks that Kyler didn’t hit. He visited Epcot, MGM Studios, the Animal Kingdom, Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure and of course, the Magic Kingdom. His favorite? “Islands of Adventure,” laughed Debra. “That was where all of the Superheroes were. He got his picture taken with Spiderman and that just made his day!”
Kyler also had an absolute blast on all the different rides. “He has no fear,” said Debra. “He rode everything he was tall enough for!”
On Kyler’s last night in Florida, he, his parents and his sister, enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Pirates Dinner Adventure Theater, where patrons can watch a live, interactive pirate show while dining. Debra said they all had a great time. “That was a totally different experience,” she smiled. “They let both of the kids up on stage. It was fun.”
Debra said that Kyler’s special wish came at a perfect time. “This whole trip was really a blessing for us. It gave him a break away from everything for a little while before his next surgery in a couple of weeks. It was really a great trip!”
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Kyler’s dream come true: Black Angus Steakhouse, Lakeview Restaurant, Pirates Dinner Adventure Theater, Redrock Canyon Grill, Royal Plaza Hotel and Wonderworks.
