Creighton, NE – Kelsey is a bubbly and outgoing teen with a positive attitude. This extraordinary girl loves to play volleyball, watch movies and listen to music. She’s crazy about Johnny Depp and says her all-time favorite movies are The Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Kelsey also enjoys school and especially excels in science. While Kelsey is a typical teenager in many ways, there is something that she is going through right now that most kids her age wouldn’t understand: Kelsey is battling cancer.
In 2006, Kelsey was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Hodgkin’s is a cancer that begins in the lymphatic system. Initially, doctors discovered numerous tumors growing in Kelsey’s chest and stomach. Since her diagnosis, Kelsey has been undergoing aggressive treatments and will soon begin radiation therapy.
Recently, Kelsey enjoyed the trip of a lifetime thanks to Kids Wish Network, an organization based out of Florida that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. Kelsey learned about the organization after the family was referred to the charity by a friend.
Once Kelsey was approved for a wish with the organization, she was asked by her Kids Wish Network wish coordinator, Vanessa, what she wanted most for her wish, Kelsey didn’t hesitate: she wanted to go to Hawaii.
Kelsey’s Kids Wish Network wish coordinator, Vanessa, immediately began the arrangements to make this incredible girl’s dream come true. She not only secured airline tickets to Honolulu, she also booked hotel accommodations, made dinner reservations for the family at area restaurants, arranged for fun activities on the island, spending money and more.
Soon after arriving in Honolulu, Kelsey and her family checked into the beautiful Royal Garden of Waikiki. With an itinerary full of things to do, Kelsey was ready to start exploring.
During her exciting visit to the Aloha State, Kelsey took full advantage of all of the fun things that Vanessa had planned for her. In addition to a visit to the Waikiki Aquarium, Kelsey enjoyed a sailing trip aboard the Maita’i Catamaran. She also went to a luau where she dined on traditional Hawaiian fare and watch dancers perform Polynesian dances. On yet another afternoon, Kelsey got to swim with the dolphins at Dolphin Quest.
Later, Kelsey took a special and touching tour of the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor where she got to meet several survivors of the 1941 attack.
The sign of a great vacation is when you don’t want to come home and that was exactly how Kelsey felt. However, when Kelsey did return home, she brought with her plenty of pictures and even more amazing memories. It was truly an experience that she will never forget.
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Kelsey’s wish extra special: Alamo, Cheeseburger Waikiki, Dolphin Quest, Germaine’s Luau, Maita’i Catamaran, Planet Hollywood, Royal Garden at Waikiki, Tony Roma’s Famous Ribs, the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial and the Waikiki Aquarium.
