Moorefield, WV- A Disney dream comes true for a brave little Moorefield girl diagnosed with cancer and Angelman syndrome.
Laughter is a beautiful thing, but that changes when the giggling is completely uncontrollable. For ten year old Kassidy, unrestrained laughter is commonplace. You see, Kassidy has Angelman syndrome. This is a neuro-genetic disorder characterized by frequent laughter or smiling, intellectual and developmental delay, sleep disturbance, seizures, jerky movements, and usually an extremely happy demeanor. Kassidy can only communicate through sign language and pictures. Just last year, Kassidy was also diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, which is a cancerous malignant tumor that occurs in the liver. Since her diagnosis, Kassidy has undergone chemotherapy to shrink the tumor to an operable size and endured surgery to remove some of it. Since the surgery, she has suffered through more chemotherapy treatments and is on a daily medication regimen.
When Kassidy was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, her parents decided that a special wish would be a wonderful reward for their little girl, who had been so brave throughout everything. After contacting Kids Wish Network, Kassidy was soon assigned to Wish Coordinator, Jen, who found out that Kassidy’s number one wish was to visit Disney World in Florida. With the help of Wish Funding Specialist, Doris, and some wonderful sponsors, Jen organized the perfect Disney holiday for Kassidy and her family including a stay at the famous Royal Plaza Hotel, tickets to all of the theme parks and dinner at the Pirates Dinner Adventure!
Once they arrived in Orlando, Kassidy and her family had to check out the Disney World resort, starting with Epcot and finishing with the Magic Kingdom. The three days that they spent at Disney World were absolutely magnificent with fun rides aplenty, including the Buzz Lightyear ride and Cinderella’s carousel, which were two of Kassidy’s personal favorites. To finish out their magical Disney day at the Magic Kingdom, the night parade complete with awe-inspiring fireworks really made for the perfect ending for Kassidy and her family: “Those were the best fireworks we’ve ever seen.”
For Kassidy’s final day in theme-park-strewn Orlando, she and her family took a trip over to Universal Studios, where she rode both the Revenge of the Mummy and the Men In Black rides more than once. The zenith of Kassidy’s day, however, did not happen at Universal, but at the Pirates Dinner Adventure. There, she was asked to stand up and wave to the audience when she was introduced as a V.I.P. “She was just beaming,” said Kassidy’s mother, Lucy. “She was so happy they said her name!”
This awesome voyage to Orlando was just what Kassidy wanted for her wish; she experienced everything that she wished for and more. About Kassidy’s Wish Coordinator, Jen, Kassidy’s mother, Lucy, said that she was extremely patient and that she did well in sending her little girl to Disney. “We couldn’t have wanted anything more,” said Lucy, and that’s just what they got all because of a little “Guardian Angel magic” over at Kids Wish Network.
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Kassidy’s wish come true: Wal-Mart, VFW Post 9606, Mathias and Associates, Pirates Dinner Adventure, Royal Plaza Hotel, Staybridge Suites, Compassion Partners, the Olive Garden Italian Restaurant, California Pizza Kitchen and WonderWorks.
