Floyds Knobs, IN – An extraordinary teenager from Floyds Knobs recently enjoyed the experience of a lifetime thanks to her friends at Kids Wish Network, an organization that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. Kristen, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, is a huge fan of actress and singer, Jessica Simpson. When Kristen was asked to pick one wish that she wanted most to come true, she didn’t hesitate: she wanted to meet her idol in person. This courageous teen’s special wish, however, came at a painful price.
In October of 2006, Kristin was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. Soon after her diagnosis, Kristen began undergoing extremely aggressive chemotherapy treatments. She has also endured numerous hospital stays and most recently suffered a severe bout of pneumonia as her immune system is almost totally compromised. As a result she was on a ventilator and spent weeks in the hospital.
Kristen’s journey to meet Jessica Simpson began with a simple phone call. A neighbor of Kristen’s family called Kids Wish Network in hopes that Kristen might qualify for a wish with the charity. When Kristen later learned that she was not only eligible but had been approved, she knew just what to ask for: she wanted to meet Jessica Simpson.
Kristen’s Kids Wish Network Wish Coordinator, Madeline, immediately got to work. All the details were arranged, including airfare for Kristen and her mother to L.A., hotel accomodations at the beautiful Intercontinental Hotel and of course, the meet and greet with Jessica Simpson, who was more than happy to meet and spend time with Kristin. In fact, Jessica went above and beyond in helping to make Kristin’s day extra special: she invited the teen to the L.A. recording studio where she was working on her new album and spent the entire afternoon with her.
Kristin admitted that she was a little nervous when she first met Jessica. “I was nervous for about the first five minutes,” she recalled. However, Kristen said that Jessica was so sweet and easy to be around that she warmed right up to the star. “She was really nice. She made you feel really comfortable.”
For the next couple of hours, the two chatted and posed for pictures. They also exchanged gifts. Kristen presented Jessica with a photo album and Jessica gave Kristen a book of devotions. Later, Jessica played Kristen some of her new songs and sang. The star studded day was far from over when another special ‘Idol” stopped by: American Idol’s Randy Jackson. “That was really cool,” laughed Kristen.
Kristen said that the entire experience was one that she will never forget. “It was a lot of fun! Jessica was so nice!” Wish Coordinator, Madeline, agreed. “We’ve worked with Jessica before and I can’t say enough about her. She’s absolutely wonderful with the kids – they love her! That makes their wishes all the more special!”
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Kristen’s wish extra special: ALS Limousine, Intercontinental Hotel, Pink Taco, Universal Studios California, Wilhelm’s Savannah Century City and of course, Ms. Jessica Simpson!
