TALLADEGA – Charmin is a sweet and quiet 18-year-old who loves listening to R&B, talking on the phone and spending time with her friends. While most teens are full of energy with a nonstop social calendar, Charmin’s life is very different. Diagnosed in 1999 with lupus, Charmin can no longer be out in the sun, must take multiple medications and experiences severe exhaustion. Charmin spends many of her days trying to recover from monthly infusions for her kidneys, hoping to avoid dialysis. “Charmin can’t do a lot of things because she tires easily,” said her mother Katrina. Knowing that Charmin could use something special in her life, Katrina’s cousin told the family about Kids Wish Network, a charity that makes dreams come true for children with life threatening illnesses.
More than anything, Charmin wished for a beautiful bedroom to relax and have as a special refuge when she’s recovering from her treatments. “I saw the bedroom set and had been wanting it for a long time,” said Charmin. “It was something that I knew we could never afford.” Kids Wish Network didn’t need to sleep on it, as they quickly searched out and found the elegant bedroom suite furniture that Charmin had been dreaming about.
“We surprised Charmin when it arrived,” said her mother. “Her little sister and I decided to play a trick on her. At first we weren’t sure that all of the furniture would fit in her room, so I temporarily switched rooms with her and moved all of my furniture in her bedroom and her new furniture in my room. When Charmin got home from school we told her that she needed to clean her bathroom knowing that she would have to pass her bedroom on the way. When she looked into the rooms she yelled, ‘My bedroom set is here! I love it!’ Charmin was so grateful to receive this special gift.”
Although Charmin will still face the uncertain challenges of battling her illness, she can now escape to a comfy haven in her very own suite of dreams.
Kids Wish Network would like to graciously thank Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Company for donating the bedroom suite, Standard Furniture for donating the queen mattress set and Braswell Furniture Company for delivering and setting up the suite, making Charmin’s wish a dream come true.
