OLDSMAR – Brittany, age 12, of Brandon, has lived through a lot for someone her age. She has struggled with ventricular Hypertrophy, Scoliosis, Urostomy, Subglottic Stenosis, received a kidney transplant at age 3, and recently underwent back surgery. Instead of asking herself “Why me?,” Brittany chooses to spend her time educating and asking everyone around her to become an organ donor and help save hundreds of lives.
When Wish Coordinator Madeline Robinson of Kids Wish Network heard of Brittany’s wish to bring her life saving mission to national television, Madeline made her dream come true in a New York minute.
On October 18, Brittany and her family flew to New York and were chauffeured by Presidential Limo to The Muse Hotel, where the family would be staying during the wish.
On Thursday, the family attended a live taping of one of Brittany’s favorite shows, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, with presidential candidate Al Gore as a special guest. Brittany also felt like a VIP when she actually met Rosie, and was presented with an autographed denim jacket Rosie personally signed for her.
Brittany thought dinner that night was so spooktacular, as she dined at the haunted mansion themed restaurant Jekyll and Hyde. Brittany received a T-shirt and pins as souvenirs, and became a part of the automated dinner show. But the evening’s excitement was far from over. Brittany and her family were given the red carpet treatment on Broadway, and were invited to the New Amsterdam Theatre to see the hit show The Lion King from the sixth row.
Like the city that never sleeps, the following morning there was no time for Brittany to sleep in. Madeline arranged for Brittany to promote her valuable message on NBC’s “Today” show with Al Roker. Her opportunity to carry out her unselfish wish had finally arrived. Brittany spoke with Al and broadcasted her big mission to people across the nation – loving every minute of it. Brittany said, “I got my message across, and it was the best!”
Brittany’s wish had come true, and there was still time to experience some of New York’s highlights before returning to Brandon the following day. Her family visited the Statue of Liberty, took a carriage ride through Central Park, and ate dinner at the Hard Rock Café. Brittany was thrilled when a tourist at the Statue of Liberty recognized her from her appearance on “Today.” Her wish was everything she had hoped for and more.
Although life for Brittany hasn’t been easy, her family will always remember her special wish when everything felt just perfect – when New York was the Apple of Brittany’s eye.
Kids Wish Network’s deepest gratitude goes out to our kind and generous sponsors: the “Today” show, American Airlines, The Muse Hotel, Presidential Limo, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, Jekyll and Hyde Restaurant, the Amsterdam Theatre, Castle Clinton of Liberty Fairy (Statue of Liberty), Central Park Carriages and the Hard Rock Café, for making Brittany’s wish a dream come true.
