Skylar, age 6, of Newton, North Carolina, is happily obsessed with her favorite movie 101 Dalmatians, loves the color blue and her cuddly bunny named Charmin. But, unlike the precious Dalmatian puppies from her favorite film, life for Skylar isn’t as simple as black and white. Skylar, born extremely premature, suffers from a variety of ailments including malnutrition and mild cerebral palsy, leaving her with a paralyzed vocal chord. Skylar has a feeding tube, requires a voice enhancer, and although she continues to grow in height, still remains extremely underweight. It’s a lot to handle for a child who’s only in the first grade.
When Wish CoordinatorTerri McConn of Kids Wish Network was contacted about Skylar and her wish to experience many of the Orlando theme parks in Florida, Terri quickly went to work creating “on the spot” excitement, making Skylar’s dream better than she could have imagined. In addition to experiencing the thrill of the amusement parks, Skylar and her family would soon be sharing special moments at Give Kids the World in Orlando, Florida, a magical resort full of laughter, joy and hugs, catering to the unique needs of families who have children with life threatening illnesses.
While at Give Kids the World, Skylar and her family ate at the resort’s whimsical restaurants and took part in all the fun-filled activities offered to all of its special guests. “Mayor Clayton (the resort’s mascot) tucked me in at night!” said an excited Skylar. “I want to live there!”
During their vacation, the family enjoyed a full Orlando experience, visiting Walt Disney World theme parks, Universal Studios and Sea World. Highlights for Skylar included the Main Street Electrical Parade at the Magic Kingdom and feeding the dolphins at Sea World. All attractions were compliments of Give Kids the World and Kids Wish Network. American Airlines provided round trip airfare for Skylar and her entire family.
While Skylar said the best part of her wish was “everything,” her Mom, Teresa, said it was “seeing her happy and not upset about what is happening in her life.” No matter what challenges the future holds for Skylar, her family will always cherish the special gift they received – a wondrous wish full of non-stop joy and happiness together, when for an entire week, everything was absolutely perfect – in “Skylar’s World.”
