INDIAN TRAIL – Kristi, age 11, of Indian Trail, North Carolina, loves swimming, anything purple and especially Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys. This adorable girl is bubbly, talkative and has an outgoing personality. Anyone looking at Kristi would never know the list of inner torments she faces on a daily basis. Kristi has epilepsy, grand mal seizures, convulsions, ADHD, OCD, ODD, LD and severe anxieties. To keep her health conditions manageable, Kristi must take medications regularly and undergo extensive neurological evaluations.
Although Kristi’s family has always provided her with bountiful love and support, she was in need of a special dose of happiness, to relieve her from the burdens of her illnesses. When Wish Coordinator Madeline Robinson of Kids Wish Network was contacted about Kristi and her wish to meet the Backstreet Boys, Madeline made “The Call” that would make Kristi’s one and only dream come true.
Kristi and her family were flown to Fort Lauderdale to catch the Backstreet Boys on their Black and Blue tour, while also experiencing some Florida fun. They had a wonderful time cruising aboard the Jungle Queen Riverboat, feasting at its exotic dining location, and taking in many of the area’s sights. Kristi was especially thrilled to be swimming in January.
On the big day, Kristi and her family were whisked away to the Hard Rock Café in an elegant stretch limousine. Chauffeur Damon Mininni made Kristi feel extra special, giving her six roses, one for her, and five to give to the members of the Backstreet Boys.
Burger King invited Kristi and her family to attend a private pre-concert party, celebrating its sponsorship of the Backstreet Boys tour. Burger King also provided Kristi and her family with tickets for the show, and helped organize Kristi’s meeting with the teen idols. As Kristi was anxiously awaiting the highlight of her wish, in walked Nick, A.J., Kevin, Brian and Howie D. This was no ordinary Meet and Greet session. The Backstreet Boys visited with Kristi privately backstage, and gave their undivided attention to their biggest fan. Kristi couldn’t hide her joy, and didn’t even try, as she
kissed Nick on the cheek. It was hard for her to believe that she was actually hanging out with the Backstreet Boys – the whole experience seemed “Larger than Life.”
The finale to Kristi’s perfect evening was seeing the Backstreet Boys perform in concert. It seemed extra special because of her personal encounter with them earlier that night. Her wish was everything she had hoped for and more. “I felt like a queen,” said Kristi. “It was the best day of my life!”
While Kristi will still have to deal with the challenges of her health problems, she can always “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss,” and remember the magic she felt when her wondrous wish came true.
Kids Wish Network’s deepest gratitude goes out to our kind and generous magic makers: The Backstreet Boys, Burger King Corporation for helping with this “Whopper” of a wish, The Best Western Beachcomber hotel, The Hard Rock Café, the Jungle Queen Riverboat, American Airlines, A Rose Limousine Service and Avis car rentals for making Kristi’s wish possible.
