UNION – Brittany is an extremely outgoing and bubbly 6-year-old who loves Mickey Mouse, coloring pictures, watching Oprah and playing with her cat Kitty Baby. She is so friendly that her mother Linda said, “When Brittany sees someone on the street she just wants to hug and kiss them.” It is amazing that even after all of the difficulties that Brittany has experienced, she maintains such a happy disposition. At only a week old, Brittany suffered a stroke on the left side of her brain, and at the age of 5 she was diagnosed with abnormal chromosome 16 and a seizure disorder. The stroke has caused damage to her brain delaying her learning capabilities in addition to affecting her speech. “She takes a variety of medications,” said her mother. “It makes her sleep a lot.” By chance, one of Kids Wish Network’s professional fundraisers contacted Brittany’s family about a charitable donation to help make wishes possible for sick children awaiting their dreams coming true. When Brittany’s mother was asked if she knew of a child with a life threatening illness in need of a wish, she told the fundraiser about Brittany. The fundraiser referred Linda to a wish coordinator at Kids Wish Network and Brittany’s wish was underway.
“Ever since Brittany has been playing with a computer at school she has been hollering for one,” said her mother. So when Wish Coordinator Madeline Robinson of Kids Wish Network spoke with this special little girl, it was no surprise that her wish was for a computer. Madeline also learned all about Brittany’s favorite things and sent her a personalized gift package for some added excitement before the arrival of her big wish. It was full of goodies including stuffed animals, puzzles, sticker books, hats, clothing, a camera, a baby doll, coloring books, pencils, a giant Hello Kitty pillow and gift set. “She loves the baby doll, blanket and Hello Kitty pillow,” said her mother. “She sleeps with them on her bed every night.”
Linda said, “When the computer arrived at our house she went hysterical! She couldn’t wait to get it set up. She immediately called her aunt and told her, ‘You have to come over to my house right now so you can hook it up!’” The computer also came with a printer and Internet access for a year. Since receiving the computer, Brittany most enjoys playing games and creating artwork. Her mother said, “Brittany has become so much more interested in doing things.” Even if Brittany is feeling tired she can now enjoy many activities right at her fingertips. Most of all, Brittany can just have fun being a kid, in the playground of her mind.
