ROSEVILLE – Ryan is a shy and sweet 17-year-old who loves studying history, playing video games and spending time with his dog and cat. As a child Ryan experienced some difficulties with his health, but a misdiagnosis went undetected until he received a blood test three years later. The test revealed that Ryan had Friedreich’s ataxia, a rare genetic and slowly progressive disorder of the nervous system and muscles. The condition is caused by a degeneration of nerve tissue in the spinal cord and of nerves that extend to areas such as the arms and legs. Ryan has a vision impairment and is already confined to a wheelchair because he can no longer walk or stand. Ryan’s older sister has the same disease, showing him firsthand what he can expect to experience for himself.
More than anything, Ryan wanted a deck built onto his house so that he could spend time outside and play with his dog. When Wish Coordinator Kara Stecker of Kids Wish Network was contacted about Ryan and his wish, she got all decked out and arranged to have a beautiful deck built so that Ryan could enjoy the beauty of his backyard. Pioneer Lumber became involved and offered the building materials at a discounted rate, while Shaw Construction volunteered to assemble the structure. After three days of building, the project was complete. Now that the deck is finished, Ryan can enjoy the great outdoors right in his own backyard.
Ryan still has to contend with the challenges of his disease, but it is now possible for him to get away from it all and escape to a private refuge when he crosses over his very own bridge to happiness.
Kids Wish Network would like to graciously thank Roy Jr. of Shaw Construction for volunteering his time to build the beautiful new deck and Pioneer Lumber for discounting lumber costs making Ryan’s dream possible.
