Dominic’s new computer is the playground of his mind

DENVER – Dominic, a witty and outgoing 15-year-old, loves watching football, Pokémon and expressing his artistic side through drawing and crafting beaded keychains. While he is a lot like other teens his age, Dominic has had to deal with extra life challenges that unexpectedly were thrown his way. Five years ago he was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy and scoliosis, and had to adapt to life in a wheelchair. Dominic chooses not to let his condition hold him back. “He excels in math, likes to learn and is very outgoing,” said his mother Ann. “Dominic is very sharing with everyone around him.” It was now Dominic’s turn to have something special done for him.

After using computers at school, Dominic dreamed of having his very own computer to explore the Internet and play all of his favorite games. When Wish Coordinator Kara Stecker of Kids Wish Network was contacted about his only wish, Kara quickly logged in to making Dominic’s computer a dream come true.

Kara spoke with Dominic and learned about all of his interests and favorite things. Taking Dominic’s likes to heart, Kara put together a personalized gift package for him so that he would have an extra surprise before the arrival of his computer. It was full of goodies including games, Pokémon posters, musical CDs, sports caps, T-shirts, a disposable camera, a cassette player and key chains. The best part was that even though Dominic received all of his favorite things, he still had his real wish to look forward to.

“It was perfect because the computer arrived on a Friday giving Dominic all weekend to play on his computer,” said his mother. “I didn’t tell him when his computer was being delivered, so he was totally surprised when it came. Dominic was so excited, he exclaimed a big ‘Yes!’” The computer also came with a printer and Internet access for a year.

Ann said, “Because of his disability the computer gives him something to do other than watch television.” So far, Dominic said his favorite uses for the computer are playing Dragon Ball Z on the Cartoon Network’s website and downloading cool stuff for his friends.

Now that Dominic has his very own computer, he can always get away from it all by playing games or exploring the world on the Internet. Most of all, Dominic can just have fun being a kid, in the playground of his mind.
