Kids Wish Network helps Randi shop around

COLLINSVILLE-The boy band NSYNC, heartthrob Ben Affleck, and the cable show, Resurrection Blvd., are some of 13-year-old Randi’s favorite things. This beautiful young girl also loves spending time with her best friend and sister, and eating just about everything. Unfortunately, even these simple things that most teens take for granted can be very difficult for Randi to fully enjoy or even do. She was diagnosed at the age of 5 months with cystic fibrosis and has to fight daily to stay alive. Her health has slowly decreased over the years and she had to undergo a double lung transplant in 1997. She has been in and out of the hospital ever since and must take numerous medications to survive. “She is usually a happy kid, but with all the medications she has to take, sometimes we have to wait until she wakes up to see what kind of mood she’ll be in,” said her grandmother, Bonnie. “Who knows, maybe she gets her mood swings from me!”

So when Wish Coordinator Terri McConn of Kids Wish Network heard about this special young lady, she wanted to put her in the best of moods. Terri quickly enlisted Walmart #361 to help make Randi’s wish of going on a shopping spree a dream come true. Not only did the employees of Walmart accept the challenge, they even organized a few bake sales to raise $250 toward Randi’s $500 shopping extravaganza.

“I just love to shop,” said Randi. “Everyone there was so nice to me. I think I was shopping for about 2 whole hours.” Randi is such an expert buyer that she was able to get all her back to school supplies, new school outfits, and four pairs of shoes with her certificate. “Shoes are my favorite,” she said.

“She is our miracle grandchild,” said Bonnie. “If it hadn’t been for the transplant, she wouldn’t be here, and we thank God for her.” Although her condition might prevent her from doing many things in life, Randi was able to forget her problems for a day and just be a typical carefree and clothes crazy teenage girl.

Kids Wish Network would like to thank Elsie McCartney and all of the wonderful employees at Walmart #361for making Randi’s wish come true.
