SPRINGFIELD- Like a lot of 14-year-old girls, Nilmarie loves the musical group N’Sync and her favorite song is “A Little More Time With You”. Her list of favorites also includes Jim Carrey, Sleeping Beauty the movie, science, and lasagna. Her absolute favorite sport is basketball, with the Chicago Bulls her team of choice and Michael Jordan her dream player. But unlike her favorite athlete, Nilmarie has trouble running up the court. She suffers from Systemic Lupus Erithomatosus, a condition that can cause severe inflammation of blood vessels, kidney disorders, and tumors of the skin and nervous system. Nilmarie often needs a walker when her joints hurt so badly that she’s unable to walk by herself.
So when Wish Coordinator Terri McConn of Kids Wish Network heard about Nilmarie and her wish to go to Disney World in Orlando to meet Mickey Mouse and his friends, Terri ‘slam dunked’ an invitation to hang out with Mickey’s cast of characters. Not only would Nilmarie and her family get to enjoy Disney and other exciting Orlando amusement parks, they would soon be sharing special moments at Give Kids the World in Orlando, Florida, a magical resort full of laughter, joy and hugs, catering to the special needs of families who have children with life threatening illnesses.
While at Give Kids the World, Nilmarie and her family ate at the resort’s whimsical restaurants and took part in all the fun-filled activities offered to all of its special guests. Nilmarie’s favorite memory of the resort was of the rabbit, Mayor Clayton, the park’s mascot who tucks each child in every night.
During their vacation, the family enjoyed a full Orlando experience, visiting Walt Disney World theme parks, Universal Studios and Sea World. And while at the amusement parks, Nilmarie loved riding the roller coasters. “The Kraken at Sea World was my favorite, “ she said.
All attractions were compliments of Give Kids the World and Kids Wish Network.
“The village was so special,” said Nilmarie’s mom. No matter what the future may hold for this young lady, she and her family will always be able to look back to a magical place in their memories where dreams really do come true.
