SOUTHPORT – Seven-year-old John David loves playing the game Trouble, watching the Rug Rats, and eating macaroni and cheese. And like so many other little boys, he is really into baseball, whether he’s watching it or playing first base for his team. It would seem that he is just a typical all American boy. But John David is far from typical. He suffers from small round cell sarcoma, a form of cancer. For a while, his family even had to move to Tennessee so he could receive treatment at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Center.
When Wish Coordinator Madeline Robinson of Kids Wish Network heard about John David and his only wish to have a play set designed like a boat for his backyard, she dove right in to give him a little bit of happiness. With the help of Playkids in Miami, Home Depot and DHL, she had all the supplies necessary to keep the dream afloat. She then enlisted the efforts of Pastor Derick Beddinger of Messiah Dove Ministries to design the ship, and his congregation to construct it; Pick A Pair Pizza provided the food to keep up the crew’s strength.
Weather permitting, John David will soon get to embark on the ‘maiden voyage’ of his new vessel complete with mast, gangplank, portholes and a slide.
