Easy Days at Hard Labor Creek

You would think that seeing hundreds of dreams come true for terminally ill children would be enough for any wish-granting organization but not so in the case of Kids Wish Network. The nonprofit charity based in Oldsmar, Florida works hard to keep in touch with their “wish kids” after a wish has been fulfilled. In addition to sending birthday cards and cards for special occasions, the kids are often surprised with trips to amusement parks, shows and sporting events in their area.

Ted Everett, owner of Hard Labor Creek Plantation, made Kids Wish Network an offer it couldn’t refuse. This man with a heart of gold contacted the organization and said he would like to make a 3 bedroom, 3 bath A-frame Chalet available for Kids Wish Network’s special children for vacations. The chalet has a hot tub, two living rooms, a huge kitchen and dining room, a recreation room with a pool table, two fireplaces and satellite TV. Having a wonderful place like this to get away from the financial and emotional burdens of a life threatening illness is like another dream come true. The chalet overlooks beautiful Owens Pond, an 85 acre spring fed lake lined with majestic cypress trees. The tranquility of the pond makes visitors come back again and again.

When asked why he contacted Kids Wish Network, Everett said he felt it was important to give something back to the community. After hearing about Kids Wish Network, Everett decided this was the charity the one he would like to partner with. He hasn’t been sorry. So far, several wish families have visited Hard Labor Creek Plantation and have experienced serene days and starlit evenings that are far away from stinging needles and scary hospital rooms. Everett said that every visit by “a wish kid” makes him feel like he is doing something worthwhile. After all, what can be better than putting a smile on the face of a sick child.
