STEPHENS CITY – Travis, age 3, of Stephens City, Virginia, loves his hamster named Speedy, Winnie the Pooh and watching Bear in the Big Blue House. But unlike most kids his age, life for Travis isn’t all fun and games. Travis has Wilms’ tumor, a cancerous tumor of the kidney. He spends his days undergoing chemotherapy and having his blood drawn, and cannot even escape the burdens of his illness in the evening hours. While most children are tucked in bed dreaming every night, Travis must be hooked up to an IV to have his system flushed.
When Wish Coordinator Terri McConn of Kids Wish Network was contacted about this special boy, Terri quickly went to work on creating a wish that she knew Travis would absolutely love. Terri would soon be sending Travis and his family on a vacation to Florida to experience the fun of its many amusement parks, and to share special moments at Give Kids the World in Kissimmee, a magical resort full of laughter, joy and hugs, catering to the unique needs of families who have children with life threatening illnesses.
Travis’ wish became a true labor of love, when two classes at Twin Lake Elementary located in Twin Lake, Michigan, saw Travis on Kids Wish Network’s web site. Wanting to become involved, Mrs. Bancuk’s second grade class, and Mrs. Chupp’s fourth grade class sold Valentine’s goody bags to raise money to help make his special wish come true. The support they received was beyond anything they could have imagined. Because of the classes’ hard work, Travis and his family would soon be going to Florida.
Travis’ stay at Give Kids the World was purely magical. The family dined at all of its whimsical restaurants and took part in many of its fun activities. Travis’ Mom, Kim, said, “Give Kids the World was a beautiful place. They treated us as special as royalty.”
During their vacation, they enjoyed a full Orlando experience, visiting Walt Disney World theme parks, Universal Studios and Sea World. Out of all the new and exciting things Travis experienced, he most enjoyed meeting Winnie the Pooh and Tigger at MGM Studios. All attractions were compliments of Kids Wish Network and Give Kids the World. American Airlines provided round trip airfare for Travis and his entire family.
While Travis will still face the uncertain challenges of battling cancer, Travis and his family will always cherish the wish they shared together, when everything was absolutely perfect – in “Travis’ World”.
Kids Wish Network would like to thank all of the caring students, parents and teachers at Twin Lake Elementary who were involved in making Travis’ wish a dream come true.
